In order to participate in experiments at or hosted by the Language and Brain Lab (LABLab), you must register in our database using the lab's online recruitment system. Part of this registration process involves acknowledging the following basic rights and rules of conduct:
Rights of All Participants:
All experiments conducted by LABLab conform to established ethical standards and have undergone internal ethical review by Oxford University's Central University Research Ethics Committee (CUREC).
LABLab will never share your information with a third party except with your permission or to the extent required by law.
LABLab participants will always receive information about what their participation entails prior to deciding whether to participate.
All researchers, staff, and participants are protected from being harmed physically, psychologically, or emotionally while participating in LABLab research.
LABLab participants are allowed to withdraw from an experiment at any time without providing a reason and without penalty.
Rules for Laboratory Experiments:
By registering for laboratory experiments, you indicate your intention to take part in LABLab experiments.
For each experiment, a certain number of registered participants will be invited to sign up to participate. You only have the right to take part in the experiment if you are invited by email.
If you get an email inviting you to an experiment, you have to take the steps outlined in the email to take part in the experiment. In doing so, you indicate your commitment to participate. If you must cancel a session, please do so at least 12 hours before the session if possible, though we understand that emergencies happen and sometimes this will not be possible.
If you register for an experimental session and show up on time, you are guaranteed to be paid £5.
Usually, payment will be in the form of cash, though we may also offer vouchers. The exact form of payment will always be specified in advance for a particular experiment.
During an experiment, you are expected to not be disruptive and to behave according to the experimenters' instructions. If you fail to do so you may be asked to leave.
By completing an experiment, you are agreeing to have the data you provide used anonymously as part of academic research. All data sharing details will be specified clearly in the consent form you sign to participate in a particular experiiment.
Rules for Online Experiments:
By registering for online experiments, you indicate your intention to take part in LABLab experiments
For each experiment, a certain number of registered participants will be invited to sign up to participate. You only have the right to take part in the experiment if you are invited by email.
If you get an email inviting you to an experiment, you have to take the steps outlined in the email to take part in the experiment. In doing so, you indicate your commitment to participate.
Compensation for participating in online experiments will be in the form of vouchers to online stores (e.g., Amazon).
During an online experiment, you are expected to keep your area free of distractions and stay focused on the experiment. If you fail to do so, you may be removed from the experiment.
By completing an experiment, you are agreeing to have the data you provide be used anonymously as part of academic research. All data sharing details will be specified clearly in the consent form you sign to participate in a particular experiiment.
You are expected to provide truthful information to the best of your knowledge.
